Unit: School Of Business, Career Services Department Summary: Business Career Services helps students explore career options, develop job-ready skills, and connect with employers to launch successful business careers. Position Summary Business Career Services seeks a highly motivated and qualified Assistant Director, Career Education. This role provides career coaching services to undergraduate and certificate students in the School of Business. Services include one-on-one coaching with students; program development and delivery in collaboration with faculty, staff, employers, and students; development of on-demand career resources; and delivery of career curriculum in the classroom. The Assistant Director, Career Education educates students on the career development process (choosing a major, networking skills, professional conduct) and opportunities that exist (internships, experiential opportunities, jobs, graduate school), and improves coaching team knowledge on industries and areas of specialization. The primary components of this role include coaching, program development and delivery, relationship development and management, resource creation, teaching and program management, along with administrative duties. Members of the Business Career Services team also regularly engage in professional development, including in-house and external training and conference opportunities, to make sure we are able to best serve students and alumni, to stay current with industry standards and changes, to revise program and services to reflect trends, and to increase our office’s visibility, both at VCU and on a broader scale. This position will report to the Director of Business Career Services. Typical Responsibilities Advise students and alumni in individual appointments, walk-in advising and small groups about exploring career and education options and in developing effective experiential learning, job search and graduate and professional school search strategies. Assist students in exploring career options and identifying sources of experiential education to further learn about their careers and industries of interests and to develop necessary skills/knowledge. Educate students on how to research employers, network, and engage in the internship/job search process using current technology and resources. Maintain awareness through collaboration with the employer relations team to provide up-to-date information related to industry/market trends, organizations actively recruiting, and to engage students in employer/alumni programming. Develop, contribute, and update career information in resources, presentations, and courses. Utilize virtual technologies and resources in the delivery of service to students as appropriate (e.g., web sites, online surveys, blogs, podcasts, etc.). Stay current on changing economic and labor conditions and industry trends. Teach and/or help facilitate for-credit student success and career development-related courses (live or online), as needed. Develop content and conduct programs and courses on a variety of topics including self-assessment, career exploration, resume writing, interviewing, internship/job search strategies, networking tactics, graduate/professional school preparation. Create and present workshops/programs/outreach on a variety of career topics to educate and prepare students for the world of work. Work with key stakeholders to create career/industry and employment specific events and workshops that facilitate student learning and skill development. Prepare and deliver presentations for various campus stakeholders (faculty, staff, prospective students, alumni, community partners, etc.). Participate in campus events involving alumni and families to engage stakeholders in our programs. Represent VCU and Business Career Services in local and national professional associations and conferences in order to stay current with industry standards and changes, revise programs to reflect trends, and increase the center’s visibility among professionals in the field. Provide leadership for, coordination of, or assistance with various special programs and projects in line with strategic planning process of Business Career Services Supervise student staff Represent Business Career Services on assigned committees to develop relationships with key stakeholders and stay abreast of current issues pertaining to the office. Play an active role in the collection and reporting of assessment data that serves as a driver for strategic decisions within the Business Career Services. Respond to and/or refer appropriately based on direct outreach from prospective and current students, families, employers, faculty, and staff. Work on special projects and initiatives as needed to support School of Business Career Services Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Master’s degree with emphasis on counseling, student affairs, education, business, or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience. At least 1 year of experience in higher education, recruitment, or related field; relevant graduate assistantships and internships will be considered. Experience advising college students and/or young professionals on career-related topics. Exceptional communication (written, oral, presentation) skills. Demonstrated proficiency in designing and delivering presentations. Ability and interest in teaching undergraduate courses focused on career and professional development. Willingness to contribute to outcomes assessment and evaluation strategies. Ability to embrace change and to effectively manage multiple priorities, programs, and projects. Ability to collaborate cross-functionally in the office environment and to interface with employers, students, alumni, faculty, and university administrators. Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU. Preferred Qualifications More than 2-5 years of experience in higher education, recruitment, or related field; relevant graduate assistantships and internships would be considered. Experience working within business fields or in providing advising to populations interested in pursuing careers in business. Ability to use relevant database systems, (e.g. Handshake, Google Suite, Canvas, Canva, Microsoft Excel). Experience teaching undergraduate courses. Project management experience. Understanding and use of career development theories. Awareness of trends within higher education, career services, and the business workforce. Experience working with large numbers of students from all backgrounds and experiences, first-generation, international, transfer, and adult students. Typical Schedule: Monday - Friday, 40 hours per week, and may require periodic weekend and evening hours. This position is in-person at the VCU School of Business in Richmond, VA, but is eligible for a limited hybrid and flexible work schedule once training is complete and must be coordinated and approved by the supervisor of this role. Hybrid and flexible arrangements may not be possible during campus events or high student service periods.
